Kalibo store recycles tarpaulin into trendy bags

6a01156f88386e970c012876fe07f7970cKalibo, Aklan – A local store has started selling bags made from recycled backdrop tarpaulin as its contribution to the town’s environmental sustainability.

Irene Canezo, supervisor of the Baligyaan store, said they started producing recycled bags with help from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

“The DOST has lent us an ecosolvent printing machine under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program or SETUP. The ecosolvent means that it is odorless compared to the traditional printing machines in the market,” Canezo said.

Aside from making bags, the store also makes wallets and coin purses out of recycled materials.

“We are also studying how to properly use strings made from old newspapers. We went into recycling business because of the call of the Kalibo local government to help preserve the environment,” she said.

The company incorporates ati-atihan designs into its tarpaulin bags to also help promote tourism.

Kalibo is home to the Ati-Atihan festival.

Married cop about to check in at motel with young woman shot to death

Pasig-motel-shooting

A married 53-year-old policeman, who was about to check in at a motel with a 20-year-old woman, was shot to death by four still unidentified men in Pasig City last night.

Police identified the victim as Senior Police Officer 2 Ernesto Sanchez. He was assigned at the anti-drug unit of the Southern Police District (SPD).

Meanwhile, his companion who was seriously injured was Josebel Polo, a jobless woman, of Mandaluyong City. She is still confined at the Rizal Medical Center.

Investigation showed that at around 11:40 p.m., Sanchez was attacked while his car was parked inside the premises of County Lodge (a motel) on Danny Floro St., Barangay Orando, Pasig City.

Senior Supt. Orlando Yebra, Pasig City police chief, said two of the gunmen disarmed the guards of the motel, while the other two headed to the car of Sanchez.

The two gunmen then peppered with bullets the vehicle of the policeman.

Sanchez and Polo sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The cop died on the spot, as apparently he was the target of the killing.

“They were waiting for their room. They were about to check in when they were attacked inside the vehicle of Sanchez,” Yebra said.

Probers said the four men were aboard a black Toyota Revo with plate number XAY-567.

The gunmen were reportedly armed with armalites and shotguns.

Seized from the crime scene were 14 various spent shells. Inside the cop’s car, a caliber .9mm was recovered.

According to the Pasig police chief, the slain police officer earlier that day conducted a buy-bust operation in Taguig City.

Furthermore, it was learned that the wife of Sanchez is also a member of the police force.

Yebra said they are now trying to obtain the CCTV footage of the motel in order to immediately solve the killing.

Malaysia to discuss the proposal to a single checkpoint at Causeway with Singapore

JOHOR ― Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he will have a gathering with his Singapore partner to “discuss in detail” the proposal to present a single inspection centre on the Causeway.

file6uvzfdvmmd113pamo8soTalking at a federal road project launch in Johor on Sunday (Feb 11), Mr Zahid said he will approach Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on the proposed single Customs and Immigration Inspection Center in Johor.

Mr Teo is also Singapore’s Co-ordinating Minister for National Security.

“They (Singapore) must form an action body as carried out by Malaysia … I have not met with Singapore Deputy Prime Minister (Teo) (but) we will discuss the matter in detail,” he said.

“Maybe the question of interpretation is different and this needs articulation from both parties between Malaysia and Singapore.”

On Saturday, it was accounted for that Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had rejected the proposal to present the single Immigration and Customs checkpoint at the Johor Causeway.

Mr Zahid, who is likewise Malaysia’s Home Affairs Minister, said if the proposal could be implemented, the single checkpoint would play an essential role in enabling a smooth flow of traffic and ease the congestion problem at the Causeway.

However, he noted that Malaysia should respect Singapore’s security concerns, yet did not anticipate any problem for the suggestion to be implemented.

“We know that there is a bottle-neck at the Johor Causeway and I have discussed with the Johor Chief Minister, as well as the federal government, to tackle the issue together,” Mr Zahid added. AGENCIES

Criminal charges filed against news outlet for referring Koh Tao as “Death Island”

BANGKOK – Thai authorities have filed criminal charges against a news site for branding the popular beach destination of Koh Tao as “Death Island” in reports about a string of murky tourist fatalities.

koh tao

Koh Tao’s stature for being a tropical paradise was first defile in 2014 when two British backpackers were brutally killed on one of its white sand beaches.

A series of other foreign tourist deaths have fuelled press coverage about the island’s “dark side”, with claims of local mafia and corrupt police plotting to conceal murders.

The most recent case to raise suspicions was the death of a Belgian woman in April, which the police ruled was a suicide.

Local online outlet Samui Times ran an article a month ago that questioned the police record and referred to Koh Tao as “Death Island”.

The piece rapidly became viral and forced officers to re-examine the case.

But the island authorities are presently suing Samui Times for violating the Computer Crime Act, which outlaws uploading false information on the web.

The tough law, which carries a maximum jail sentence of five years, is frequently used by the authorities and business elite to stop negative reporting in Thailand.

Koh Tao mayor Chaiyan Thurasakul disclosed to AFP the site is accused for “damaging Koh Tao’s reputation by calling it Death Island”. The charges were recorded on Thursday (July 6) by local district chief Krikkrai Songtanee, who said the report had caused “panicked tourists to cancel their bookings”.

The police will review the charges and choose whether to take the case to prosecutors.

Samui Times, which told AFP it had yet to be contacted about the charges, guarded its reporting in an online post.

“The Samui Times believes that it is in the best interests of any visitor to the island to be aware of the numerous tourist deaths and the fact that many families of those who died on the island are not satisfied with police investigations,” it said.

The English-language newspaper Bangkok Post blasted the lawsuit in a publication, calling the authorities to clear up any misinformation rather than threaten the outlet.

In 2015, another local news site, Phuketwan, closed after running out of cash in its successful bid to overcome a slander suit brought by Thailand’s naval force over its reports on human trafficking.
